Many women have heartburn for the first time during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Although this is not usually a sign of a serious problem, it can be uncomfortable or painful.

Gastroesophageal reflux is often called “acid reflux” or “heartburn.” But this condition has nothing to do with the heart!

Causes of Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy
Heartburn occurs when digested food from your stomach, which contains acid, is pushed up toward your esophagus. This causes a burning sensation behind your breastbone or a burning sensation that starts in your stomach and seems to rise up. You may also have a sour taste in your mouth or a feeling that vomit is rising in your throat.

Normally, food moves down a pipe (called the esophagus) between your mouth and your stomach. When you’re not eating, a circular valve around the bottom of your esophagus closes off the connection between your esophagus and your stomach. This valve keeps the acids in your stomach from rising up.

When you swallow, the valve relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow through. If the valve relaxes when you’re not eating, the acids from your stomach can flow back up into your esophagus, irritating it and causing a burning sensation.

Several things can cause the valve to relax more easily, such as:

* Greasy or fatty foods
* Chocolate or drinks containing caffeine
* Onions, garlic or spicy foods
* Certain medications
* Eating a very large meal
* Lying down after eating

During pregnancy, hormones relax the muscles in your digestive tract, including the valve in the esophagus. This allows stomach acids to more easily seep back up the esophagus, especially when you’re lying down. Heartburn can be worse in the second and third trimesters, when your growing uterus presses on your stomach. This sometimes pushes food back up into the esophagus.

Pregnancy hormones also slow down:

* The muscles that push food from your esophagus into your stomach
* The muscles that contract to digest food in your stomach, which slows down your digestion

These changes can also lead to indigestion, which can make you feel very full, bloated or gassy.

Heartburn and Indigestion: What You Can Do
Follow these tips to prevent heartburn:

* Eat smaller meals. Eat five or six small meals a day instead of eating a few large meals.
* Drink less while eating. Avoid drinking large amounts of fluids with your meals. Drink your fluids between meals instead.
* Avoid foods that trigger heartburn. Avoid spicy, greasy or fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, and other foods that can cause heartburn.
* Avoid bending or lying down right after eating. Sit up, do light housework, or take a walk until your body has had a chance to digest. Be sure to eat your last meal of the day several hours before bedtime. If you need to lie down, prop your upper body up with a few pillows.
* Don’t gain too much weight. Gain a sensible amount of weight. Stay within the guidelines your health care provider sets. Excess pounds put extra pressure on your abdomen, increasing your chances of getting heartburn.
* Wear loose clothing. Tight clothing can increase the pressure on your stomach and abdomen.
* Raise your head when you lie down. Prop your head up a few inches with pillows. Or raise the head of your bed with two bricks or blocks.

If you need an antacid to relieve symptoms, talk to your health care provider to choose the right one for you.

When to Talk to Your Health Care Provider
For most people, heartburn is temporary and mild. But severe heartburn can be the sign of a more serious problem. Talk to your health care provider if you have any of the following:

* Heartburn that returns as soon as your antacid wears off
* Heartburn that wakes you up at night
* Difficulty swallowing
* Spitting up blood
* Black stools
* Weight loss

Rib Pain During Pregnancy

Article by Orit Cox

Rib pain during pregnancy can be a persistent problem, especially during the third trimester. Your rib cage may feel mildly sore or extremely tender and bruised. You may have discomfort on either side, or both sides, though it is commonly worse on the right side of the ribs.

Pain occurs in and under the ribs as your uterus grows. Later in pregnancy, your abdomen becomes stretched, and your uterus stretches upward as well as outward. Your pelvis and abdomen are becoming full, and your baby is beginning to press up under your ribs and chest. This upward pressure from your baby may also make you feel short of breath.

This pressure on your ribs and diaphragm may also result in shoulder pain, because there are nerves in the diaphragm which can refer pain into the shoulders. This pain can be very sharp! It may also result in indigestion or acid reflux as your baby puts the squeeze on your stomach.

Additionally, as your breast become larger, they also place pressure on your ribs. During pregnancy, your breasts may increase by one full cup size or more. The extra weight pulls your shoulders forward and down, and places strain on the upper back, neck, and often results in pain around the rib cage.

As your body prepares for the delivery of your baby, your hormones are hard at work loosening your muscles and ligaments. This loosening can allow your ribs to shift and move in ways that were not natural before, causing discomfort. Your ribcage is not only loosening, but expanding as well, not only to make room for your baby, but also to help increase your breathing and lung capacity. Even though you may be feeling short of breath, your body is taking in about forty percent more air than it did before you became pregnant.

Rib pain during pregnancy can cause the greatest discomfort when you are in a sitting position. Practicing good posture is especially important. Try to make sure that you sit up straight with your shoulders back. Slouching will compress your abdomen and result in more pain.

Try to wear loose clothing so that you do not add any extra pressure to your belly. Try getting a new bra. It is especially important to have a supportive bra that is not too tight. Under wire bras may put too much extra pressure on your ribs. Now may be a good time to invest in a good nursing bra. They usually offer nice support without being too tight and will be useful once your baby is born.

Holding your arms up over your head can take some pressure off and provide temporary relief from rib pain by lifting the ribs away from the uterus.

Practicing doorway chest stretches can also be helpful because they, too, will help rotate the shoulders up and back, which can also help lift the ribs away from the uterus.

Stretching and prenatal yoga are great for keeping your body long and loose. The less compressed you are, the less your rib cage will hurt. Breathing and relaxation exercises may also be effective. There are a variety of hands on techniques that can help to gently stretch and lift your ribs away from the uterus. Applying these techniques to your breasts, chest and abdomen, can really relieve a lot of pain and pressure from your body, though you will need a friend or partner to help you.

Scheduling a visit to your massage therapist, chiropractor, or acupuncturist, may also help provide relief from rib pain during pregnancy.

If you are having rib and flank pain that goes through to your back, and or burning or pain with urination, you should contact your health care provider. This could be an indication of a urinary tract infection.

Does breast pain post ovulation feel different than during pregnancy?

Question by elaine: Does breast pain post ovulation feel different than during pregnancy?
I always get very sore breasts right around the time I ovulate up until my next period starts. And by sore, I mean it hurts to run, hurts to lay on my stomach, etc. I know that breast pain is an early pregnancy symptom. I am 7 dpo and waiting to find out if I am pregnant. I have major breast pain but wondering if it is possible to differentiate between ovulation pain and pregnancy pain??

Best answer:

Answer by TJ
I don’t think there is a clear answer to this hon. With my first two pregnancies, mine were sore off and on. Sometimes after ovulation, mine start to hurt and even then I have months where there’s very little tenderness all the way to extreme pain! When I got pregnant the third time, they were kind of medium sore from about 10 dpo forward, but I miscarried at 8 weeks.

My point is, it’s not a reliable pregnancy indicator. Hormones cause the breast pain and because they flucuate so much throughout your cycle, it’s really hard to tell the reason why.

Best wishes for a BFP this month!

Is pain in left side of rib and lower back pain a sign of ectopic pregnancy

Question by Heather H: Is pain in left side of rib and lower back pain a sign of ectopic pregnancy
I am 8 weeks pregnant and have had some brown spotting for about 4 days, very light spotting . Its like the end of a period. I have also had lower back pain and a sharp pain by my left ribs. I’m concerned about an ectopic pregnancy the more I read about it. the sharp pain in the ribs comes and goes, and mostly feels like a sideache. Also I feel very bloated a lot of the time and am also pretty constipated. Should I be worried? Does this sound like an ectopic pregnancy? For those who have had one, where exactly is the abdominal pain at, is it in your lower stomach or can it be higher like by your ribs. Oh I also had a brief instant, where the spotting I had turned bright red, but didn’t last long and was not heavy….I’m very concerned now….

Best answer:

Answer by Stephanie S
You need to talk to your obgyn about this, he can run test and see what the problem is!

The first warning signs of an ectopic pregnancy are often pain or vaginal bleeding. You might feel pain in your pelvis, abdomen, or, in extreme cases, even your shoulder or neck (if blood from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy builds up and irritates certain nerves). Most women describe the pain as sharp and stabbing. It may concentrate on one side of the pelvis and come and go or vary in intensity.

Any of the following additional symptoms can also suggest an ectopic pregnancy:

vaginal spotting
dizziness or fainting (caused by blood loss)
low blood pressure (also caused by blood loss)
lower back pain

With PMS my breasts are sensitive and hurt a bit, but not too much. When I was pregnant the pain was bad. I had to wear a bra 24/7 for support. It was awful.

Would you get bad indigestion in the first 2 weeks of pregnancy?

Question by CoCoPuffs: Would you get bad indigestion in the first 2 weeks of pregnancy?

Ok I’m not really sure if im pregnant YET. I have been with my boyfriend 5 years and I’m 21. We aren’t exactly trying, but i haven’t been on the pill for 6 months now and we don’t use any other method of birth control either. He uses the “pull out” method if it could even be called one! Well we usually try to plan around my “peak” days but this past month we hit 3 of the highest “peak” days in a row in my cycle…but its only been about a week and a half and Im supposed to start next week, but i just kind of have this feeling..is it even possible to have symptoms this early? I can’t eat ANYTHING without getting really bad heartburn and that is not like me, and I’m soo tired and I am extremely emotional. Could it all be in my head or is it possible?
